Piano

When I was at school, I took piano lessons for many years, and eventually reached grade 4.  Although I stopped playing the piano when I left school, I’ve recently started playing again, inspired to learn to play my two favourite piano pieces – Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin, and Gymnopédie No. 1 by Erik Satie.

Scott Joplin – Maple Leaf Rag

Here’s a video of me performing this piece in August 2008:

I find it very difficult to play this piece all the way through without making any mistakes, so in this video I’ve edited together several different takes.  I find the third section in Db major especially difficult to play, so please forgive any mistakes I make there!

I find it very interesting to watch other people playing this piece (for example, I’m very impressed by this guy’s accurate performance).  I also like watching people improvising on the piece – this guy’s arrangement is great, and I particularly love this video of Rod Miller’s ultra high speed improvisation (no, it hasn’t been speeded up!)  This orchestral arrangement is great fun (for some reason, it reminds me of the Wallace and Gromit music!), and this bass guitar arrangement is very clever.
