ASCIIroids

Page under construction since 21st March 2008...

Introduction

ASCIIroids is a fairly basic side-scrolling shooter game, which I wrote in about 1,000 lines of JavaScript, and which uses only ASCII characters for its graphics (although nitpickers will correctly point out that the © symbol is a non-ASCII character).

The game is a form of ASCII art, which is not only animated, but also interactive!  If you’re interested in this sort of thing, then check out Star Wars ASCIImation – Episode IV “A New Hope” reproduced in ASCII art!

I’ve always loved side-scrolling shooters, and some of my favourites are:

R-Type Super Aleste Gradius III Jets'n'Guns
R-Type Super Aleste Gradius III Jets'n'Guns

Jets'n'Guns is particularly cool!  It’s available for Windows and Mac, and features an awesome metal soundtrack (legally free to download here) by Machinae Supremacy.

Obligatory background story

No side-scrolling shooter is complete without a background story to set the scene, so...

You are Ace Lightyear, the most fearless spaceship pilot ever to roam the Galaxy!  You’ve received a Code Alpha encrypted transmission from Starfleet HQ, who have discovered that the Veridian Belt (a remote asteroid belt) is being used by the evil Zorgons as an impenetrable barrier to protect their new secret weapon (codenamed the Quantum Cannon) which has the power to vaporise an entire planet.

Your mission is to pilot the new prototype X-91 Spaceship into the Veridian Belt and clear a path through to the Core Asteroid, where the Quantum Cannon is believed to be located.  Your ship is fitted with a Modelocked Pulsed Laser, Invinciball Fabricator and Hypershield Generator, and can be upgraded with Missile Launchers, Static and Orbiting Shields, and Gatling Units.

Long-range sensors have detected Zorgon Battleships lurking within the Veridian Belt, so watch out!  Starfleet HQ admits that this mission could prove to be challenging, and that you probably won’t make it through to the Core Asteroid, but you are their only hope.  Good luck Ace!

Play the game

Play ASCIIroids If nothing happens when you click on this button, check whether your browser is blocking pop-up windows for this site.  Alternatively, click here to open the game window.

If the music doesn’t load, make sure you have Flash and JavaScript enabled.  If the music loads but you can’t hear it, make sure your computer speakers are switched on and turned up.

ASCIIroids should run at 15 FPS, and it will adapt to your computer’s speed to achieve this framerate.  If it always runs slower than 15 FPS, then your computer probably isn’t fast enough.
